My rating: 3.5 popcorns
Netflix lists this as ‘The first installment of one of the most successful detective serials in film history’. The AFI list of 100 greatest comedies lists this at number 32. So which is it?
At 91 minutes, it’s barely either. This is a very fast paced movie so don’t plan on watching it while doing something else. You’ll miss stuff.
Wiliam Powell and Myrna Loy play Nick and Nora Charles, a wealthy couple that live exactly the way we probably all would want to live in the 30’s. However, Nick is a former detective and he gets pulled into a case of an old friend who goes missing. And then it appears that the old friend has become a multiple murderer.
The writing is great and the banter between Nick and Nora is a lot of fun (but as I said, pay attention).
There are a lot of characters for a 90 minute movie and at times I felt like they should have either stretched the movie out a bit to better develop and differentiate them or cut a few out. The ending is also a bit abrupt.
It was a fun watch and I will be looking for the rest of the series somewhere along the line.
This movie is available via iTunes or Amazon Video. Or the DVD arm of Netflix, which is how I watched it.
